DIY Sandbox Projects [Picture Instructions]

Kids love playing sands and they can enjoy hours of fun with their little friends or alone. Instead of going to beach, bring sands in own backyard for outdoor fun in Sunny days! There are different DIY Sandbox projects available, we can basically use any containers to put sands in, but you can create a never ending fun for your little ones for all seasons by making the DIY Sandbox with built in bench and cover to let them play imaginative adventures all year long.

The ingenious design of this wooden box allows it to be opened up to provide sitting space for your kid. The top cover of the box slide out to be benches at both sides for kids rest.

Supplies / ingredients:

  • 2 – 1 x 8 x 8
  • 6 – 1 x 4 x 8
  • 1 – 2 x 4 x 8 or Stud Length
  • 4 sets of exterior grade hinges
  • Rope OR 4 exterior grade handles
  • 1 1/4 inch screws
  • 1 1/4 inch pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue

  • Pencil

  • Hearing protection
  • Kreg Jig™
  • Drill
  • Circular saw
  • Compound miter saw
  • Sander
  • Countersink drill bit

This sandbox can be done in a weekend, using the decking timber or recycled wood pallets. The tricky part would be crafting the lid that not only opens up to reveal the box, but also slides back to provide two benches at both sides. The size or width is adjustable according to your own garden space, and it’s portable to move around.

If the fold lid may be tricky and need seasoned woodworking skills, this Deluxe Covered Sandbox may be easier to craft with basic wood drilling. By adding the hinge to one side of the box to open as a deck for picnic.
